When the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier was sunk at the end of season one, Venom removed itself from Harry Osborn and was sampled by the Green Goblin before he left. He later captured Peter Parker and injected it into him, and due to Venom being part of Peter and Peter's smarter intelligence, the Venom sample became Carnage. After the Green Goblin learned Spider-Man was still alive, he sent Carnage to Harry's house and fought White Tiger, Power Man, Iron Fist and Nova before Harry reminded Carnage they still had a bond and took it off him and onto himself, turning him into Venom. Norman later took Venom with him and a small piece was left behind, which was taken by S.H.I.E.L.D..
